Биолог, писательница, общественная деятельница, участница движения за охрану окружающей среды. С детства мечтала писать, но любовь к биологии оказалась сильнее, и она стала океанологом, вела научную работу и преподавала в ряде высших учебных заведений. В 1937 опубликовала в журнале "Атлантик мансли" [Atlantic Monthly] статью, ставшую основой ее первой книги "Подводный ветер" ["Under the Sea Wind"] (1941). Книга имела большой успех из-за редкого сочетания научной достоверности и высоких художественных качеств. Написала еще ряд книг: "Море вокруг нас" ["The Sea Around Us"] (1951), "На краю моря" ["The Edge of the Sea"] (1955), "Безмолвная весна" ["Silent Spring"] (1962). В последней книге подняла вопрос о непоправимом вреде, который наносит окружающей среде широкое использование пестицидов и гербицидов, в частности ДДТ. Книга вызвала широкие отклики, в результате последовало создание нескольких официальных комиссий и запрет на применение ДДТ
